Notices: November 10, 2024
Dear St. Aidan’s,
This Sunday we remember in our services all those from this church who died in World Wars I and II. We will welcome a guest preacher, Chris Brittain, in our 10:30 service. Chris is Dean of the Trinity College Faculty of Divinity at University of Toronto, and an Anglican priest.
This semester, on my day off on Mondays, I am auditing a graduate class that Chris is teaching—Theology at Ground Zero: Speaking of God at Times of Crisis. This is a subject that Chris has spent much time thinking and teaching about over the course of his academic career, and he’s published a book on it, Religion at Ground Zero: Theological Responses to Times of Crisis. Based on my experience in his classroom this fall, he is an ideal person to share a sermon with us on Remembrance Sunday, and in this time of continued crises around the world.
How do we as Christians hold onto faith in times of challenge, whether in our own lives or in the life of the world? One way is by continuing to gather for prayer and worship, and doing what we can to share love with the people in our circle of care.
I hope to see you in church as we remember and reflect this Sunday.

Opportunities to Gather & Grow
9. Gather & Grow—every Sunday morning, 9:15-10:15 in the Parish Hall.
Every Sunday between now and Christmas, as part of our Diocese’s Season of Spiritual Renewal, we are offering a variety of conversations, speakers, and activities meant to encourage us to gather together as we seek to walk in love and grow in our faith. Childcare available for infants through grade 5. We continue our Traveling the Way of Love series through November 17.
10. This year’s Advent reflection book: Advent is the season in our church year when we prepare our hearts in anticipation for the birth of Jesus at Christmas. This Advent, our parish-wide Advent reflection book is Embracing Humanity by Isabelle Hamley. Throughout the month of December, I encourage you to consider reading this book as a spiritual discipline. There is a short reflection and prayer for each day from Dec. 1 through Dec. 25. You can read it on your own, with your family, or join one of the conversation groups that Rev. Becky will host each week beginning December 1—there will be an online group and an in-person group.
The book is available on Kindle, or a paperback can be ordered online. To reserve one of the books from the church’s book order, email Rev. Becky.
Isabelle Hamley explores what it meant for God to become flesh and how this enables us to understand what it means to be human. Seeing humanity in a new light. God became flesh at Christmas. But how does God, who created all things, live within the limitations of humanity – limitations that humanity itself often resents and tries to transcend? And what does it truly mean to be human? Through the lens of Advent and Christmas, Isabelle Hamley guides us through daily reflections and prayers, encouraging us to meditate on being human in the light of God's choice to reach out to us in Jesus.
