Brief Notes from the 154th Regular Session of the Synod
of the Diocese of Toronto
(November 25-26, 2011)
The Synod of the Diocese of Toronto met this past Friday and Saturday in Toronto. There were over 700 delegates present from the various churches in the Diocese. Delegates from St. Aidan’s were Michael Van Dusen and me, along with our priest, Lucy Reid. Other St. Aidan’s attendees were: Joy Horswill, on behalf of the Royal School of Church Music; Valear Howsam, representing All Saints; and Robyn Ryan Bell, who was elected a member of the Advisory Commission on Termination of Clerical Appointments, as well as Vice-Chancellor of Synod. Congratulations, Robyn.
Some of the meeting was spent on traditional items of business (and for details, please go to the Diocese website), but the magical thing for me was this year’s Synod theme—“Celebrating this Fragile Earth: Growing Communities of Hope and Compassion”. We learned so much—from a Biblical and ecclesiastical point of view–about planet Earth and our effect on it through informative workshops, by listening to several eminent speakers, and viewing videos highlighting our world’s breathtaking beauty as well as disturbing scenes of devastation that we have wrought.
The teachings of this Synod confirmed that we are in partnership with God as stewards of this planet and its inhabitants, but it is painfully obvious that we aren’t doing a very good job. What has become imperative is that we change our values if we are going to survive. Bishop Colin Johnson charged us to consider what we are doing to the environment in our neighbourhoods and in our churches and then find ways to make a difference. He called upon us to begin making changes that honour God and His creation, rethinking how we can do even little things locally, which add up to big things globally.
We left Synod with the realization that our world is desperate for hope, and the Gospel is about hope. The comforting thing is that God is present with us and inviting us to change the world with Him.

Do you PAG?
More and more parish families are signing up for pre-authorized giving. It’s simple, costs you nothing and makes a huge difference to our finances at St. Aidan’s.
Our expenses continue to outstrip our revenues. While all our current bills are paid we are once again building a payable with the Diocese (our contribution to the activities of the wider church and our priest’s salary and benefits). We mustn’t let this continue.
How can you help? Sign up for PAG – it ensures your financial support for the day to day costs of our ministry at St. Aidan’s is here – even if you can’t be with us! Alternatively you can meet with one of the wardens to leave us post dated cheques for June through September. Our ministry never stops – we need your support to show the same commitment.
